How Can You Help?

There are many ways to join Music4Life™ in supporting free access to music education for all students. The typical types of support that we receive are listed below, and should you have an idea of something we haven’t considered, we welcome your ideas. Please reach out to us via email or phone at 206.999.2388 to discuss further.

Donate an Instrument

Many people have lovingly used musical instruments in their garages or attics. Every six, eight, ten years, when they get ready to move again, they look at that old trombone, violin or clarinet, and ask themselves, “Why am I still carting this instrument around?”

Music4Life™ understands that some people have precious memories of their used musical instruments and we don’t want a reluctant giver. What we do want are donors who appreciate the unique value of instrumental music in the life and education of a child; donors who understand that the highest and best use of a long-unused musical instrument is to put it back into play — and who want all children, regardless of family need, to have it. And to get the benefits of a full, basic education guaranteed by the state constitution.

Musical instruments come to us that are ten, twenty, fifty years old or more. Music4Life gets discounts from preferred local music repair shops for the professional analysis and repair of these musical instruments, if they can be repaired. Many can be.

Start a Chapter

The idea behind Music4Life™ is elegantly simple: provide ready-to-play musical instruments to students in need so they may fully participate in school instrument music programs. Establishing a successful new Music4Life Chapter, however, requires careful planning, committed community leadership and long-term support.

Music4Life already has the essential organizational structure in place, including IRS non-profit status, Washington State registration, bookkeeping and accountability systems, marketing support and the legal and administrative framework necessary to operate district-based programs successfully. We are also continuing to update and refine our Chapter development guidebook to assist communities interested in forming new partnerships.

Each Music4Life Chapter is considered a valuable long-term investment in students and the community it serves. As requests continue to come from additional school districts interested in joining Music4Life, the Board of Directors carefully evaluates each opportunity to ensure that the necessary foundation exists for long-term success.

Before authorizing the establishment of a new school district-based Music4Life Chapter, the Music4Life Board of Directors generally looks for three key elements:

  • A dedicated group of local community leaders — often including members of Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, or other civic organizations — willing to help establish and sustain the local Chapter;
  • Commitment of sufficient start-up funding to begin repairing donated musical instruments as soon as donations are received; and
  • A formal letter of endorsement from the school district superintendent expressing support for the Music4Life partnership and its mission.

Once these elements are in place, the Music4Life Board of Directors reviews the proposal and determines whether to authorize the formation of a new Chapter serving that public school district.

Music4Life looks forward to working with communities throughout Washington State to help ensure that every student has the opportunity to experience the educational, personal and lifelong benefits of instrumental music.

Join a Chapter

Music4Life™ Chapters are always in need of volunteers with specialized expertise, community connections, or simply a passion for helping students succeed through music education. Volunteers play an essential role in supporting both the planning and implementation of activities that help raise donations of musical instruments and financial contributions necessary to sustain the mission of Music4Life.

Volunteer opportunities may include organizing instrument drives, assisting with fundraising events, helping coordinate community outreach, supporting local Chapter activities, providing administrative assistance, or contributing professional skills in areas such as marketing, communications, event planning, bookkeeping, grant writing or music education advocacy.

The success of every Music4Life Chapter depends upon the dedication of community volunteers who share a commitment to expanding access to instrumental music opportunities for students. If you are interested in joining or assisting a Chapter, please contact us via email or phone at 206.999.2388 and we will provide you with contact for the Chapter of your interest.
